Misted double glazing repair in Glasgow

If your windows have gone cloudy, foggy or have water sitting between the panes, the glass unit has failed. The frame is almost always fine. We swap the unit and leave the frame, the beading and your plasterwork exactly as they were.

A double glazed unit is two panes of glass with a sealed cavity between them. When that seal fails, damp air gets in and condenses on the inside where you cannot clean it. It is not a cleaning problem and it does not fix itself. It also stops the window insulating properly, so the room gets colder and the heating works harder.

The important thing to understand is that this is a glass problem, not a window problem. Plenty of companies will use a misted unit as the opening to quote you for a full house of replacement windows. In most cases you need one pane of glass, measured and swapped, and the rest of the window is fine for years yet.

Signs you need this

  • Cloudy or foggy patches you cannot wipe off
  • Water droplets or a tide mark between the panes
  • A rainbow or oily sheen in certain light
  • One room noticeably colder than the rest of the house
  • Black specks or dirt trapped inside the sealed unit

How the job runs

  1. 1
    We measure

We come out, measure the failed unit and check the frame and beading are sound. If the frame has gone we will tell you straight.

  2. 2
    We order the glass

The unit is made to your exact size. Standard clear glass is usually a few days; obscure, leaded or toughened takes a little longer.

  3. 3
    We fit it

The old unit comes out, the new one goes in with fresh beading. Most windows take well under an hour and we take the old glass away.

What it costs

Replacing a failed unit is a fraction of the cost of a new window, because you are paying for glass rather than glass plus frame plus fitting plus disposal. Price depends on size and glass type, so we quote after measuring rather than guessing over the phone.

Common questions

Can misted double glazing be fixed without replacing the glass?

No. There are companies that drill and vent units to clear the fog. It removes the symptom for a while but the seal is still broken, so moisture comes back and the insulating gas is long gone. Replacing the unit is the only permanent fix.

Do I need new window frames as well?

Usually not. If the frame opens, closes and locks properly and the beading is sound, you only need the glass. We will tell you honestly if the frame is past it.

How long does it take?

The measure takes a few minutes. Once the glass arrives, most units are swapped in under an hour, and we can normally do several windows in one visit.

Can you match old or patterned glass?

Most obscure patterns are still available, and leaded and Georgian bar styles can be matched. Bring us a photo and we will tell you what we can get.
